Install jdk on Macbook MacOS M2

Published : 21st Dec 2022

OS version: MacOS 13.0.1 (22A400) - Ventura

Architecture: Silicon chip - M2

Traditionally, MacOS on Intel chip comes with preinstalled JAVA so the user is ready to start developing as they get it.

On new Silicon chip machines, user may need to install it by themself.

Installation can be done in two ways.

  1. Terminal, Download using Homebrew utility.
  2. Using .dwg installer downloaded from Oracle site.

This guide is targeted for Terminal

Install Java 11 using Homebrew

vishesh@visheshs-MacBook-Pro ~ % brew install openjdk@11

JAVA Installation Output

==> Caveats

For the system Java wrappers to find this JDK, symlink it with

  sudo ln -sfn /opt/homebrew/opt/openjdk@11/libexec/openjdk.jdk /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/openjdk-11.jdk

openjdk@11 is keg-only, which means it was not symlinked into /opt/homebrew,

because this is an alternate version of another formula.

If you need to have openjdk@11 first in your PATH, run:

  echo 'export PATH="/opt/homebrew/opt/openjdk@11/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc

For compilers to find openjdk@11 you may need to set:

  export CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/homebrew/opt/openjdk@11/include"

==> Summary

🍺  /opt/homebrew/Cellar/openjdk@11/11.0.17: 669 files, 295.2MB

==> Running `brew cleanup openjdk@11`...

Disable this behaviour by setting HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_CLEANUP.

Hide these hints with HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_HINTS (see `man brew`).

Check JAVA installation on path:

vishesh@visheshs-MacBook-Pro ~ % java -version

java version "1.8.0_351"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_351-b10)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.351-b10, mixed mode)

Install Homebrew

vishesh@visheshs-MacBook-Pro ~ % /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install.sh)"

Installation Output:

Warning: /opt/homebrew/bin is not in your PATH.

  Instructions on how to configure your shell for Homebrew

  can be found in the 'Next steps' section below.

==> Next steps:

- Run these three commands in your terminal to add Homebrew to your PATH:

    echo '# Set PATH, MANPATH, etc., for Homebrew.' >> /Users/vishesh/.zprofile

    echo 'eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"' >> /Users/vishesh/.zprofile

    eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)"

- Run brew help to get started

- Further documentation:

    https://docs.brew.sh

Make sure to follow further steps mentioned in output.
